In particular, the butterfly paintings are representative of the artist's post-expressionist narrative and carry special meaning. 'I was an exchange student in Managua, Nicaragua and I used to play hookie from school catch butterflies in the jungles. It just left such an indelible mark on me. We went to one of the cotton farms and there was a lake and there must have been 100,000 butterflies perched by the lake drinking and each one was more irredisent and more gorgeous than the next. The memories have just stayed with me for my whole life and I paint them over and over again. And of course they have all kinds of other meaning metamorphosis and transformation and again, I crosshatch into them. Hardly a day goes by when I dont reference this experience. Ill never forget when I saw the first morpho flying across a field.'
