Indeed the drama, heroism and violence of the Spanish sport of bullfighting has captivated generations of artists, poets and writers Pablo Picasso among them. Drawn to its ritual and symbolism, the Spanish artist depicted bullfighting and the bull consistently throughout his oeuvre.Given Picasso always identified himself as the bull, and had a storied life filled with wives, women, and mistresses, one interpretation of 'Torero and La Senorita' speaks to the artist's complex relationships with the women in his life. In 1949 Picassos illustrations for Les Carmen de Carmen were presented in a folio consisting in an array of mediums, from aquatint to etching. The timeless story of Carmen, which became popular through Georges Bizets opera (1875), evoked in Picasso associations with Spain and the corrida.
