In the 1980s Donald Sultan put imagery back into abstract painting, focusing on common objects such as fruit, flowers, dominoes, and buttons. His monumental compositions give equal weight to negative and positive space, vibrant colors starkly contrasting black backgrounds made of industrial materials such as tar. Throughout his career the artist has also used printmaking to emphasize his subjects’ organic lines and flat color, as seen in this work featuring his iconic black and red poppies.
