Born in Canada in 1959, Jane Waterous is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist whose work celebrates the universal themes of love, life, laughter, and family. Raised in Brantford, Ontario, Waterous pursued her lifelong passion for the arts through studies at Queen’s University, OCAD University, Sheridan College, and New York University, where she completed degrees in art and film.
Before dedicating herself fully to fine art, Waterous began her creative career as a director in multimedia and later worked in film, directing, producing, and editing short films for Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. Her films were shown at several international film festivals, reflecting an early commitment to storytelling, movement, and emotional expression—qualities that continue to define her work today.
In 1998, Waterous moved from Canada to the Bahamas, where life in the islands with her family deepened her artistic focus and inspired her ongoing exploration of color, joy, connection, and the shared experiences that shape our lives. Over the past three decades, she has developed a diverse and dynamic body of work spanning a wide range of media, techniques, and visual languages.
Among her many series, Waterous’ “Morse” series translates excerpts from stirring speeches, songs, and poems into three-dimensional arrangements of light, dark, and colorful dots and dashes, using the universally recognized language of Morse code. Her “Into the Blue” series captures children leaping with unbridled freedom against textural expanses of brilliant blues, evoking the sky, sea, and spirit of release. In her “Resination” series, Waterous combines resin, acrylic, and marbles in a highly technical yet playful process that emphasizes vibrancy, texture, and the joy of color. Her “Harmony” series, inspired by her travels throughout Asia, invites viewers into a contemplative space of reflection, balance, and inner peace.
Waterous is best known for her celebrated “Gatherings” series, a body of work that represents the culmination of decades of artistic exploration. In these vibrant compositions, sculpture-like, three-dimensional figures appear to dance across the canvas in halos of light, color, depth, and movement. Literally and figuratively emerging from the surface, the figures create a powerful sense of energy, community, and shared emotion. While each work conveys its own unique experience, the series as a whole radiates joy, wonder, and human connection.
For Waterous, the “Gatherings” series reflects a deeply held belief: “Everything that matters happens when people come together. Life is a series of Gatherings, that all add up to a life well lived.” This sentiment lies at the heart of her artistic practice, where personal memory, collective experience, and emotional resonance come together through color, texture, and form.
Drawing inspiration from the world around her—from the energetic streets of New York to the quiet harmony of a Bahamian beach—Waterous creates work that is both personal and universal. As she explains, “The work you see today is the product of past and present experiences, a reflection of the courage it takes to Live, Laugh & Love.”
Throughout her 35-year career, Jane Waterous has earned international recognition for her ability to create art that connects deeply with viewers. Her work has been featured in numerous international solo exhibitions, displayed in luxury hotels around the world, and collected by Fortune 500 corporations, royal families, and celebrities. Winner of the coveted Art Expo NYC Solo Artist Award, Waterous continues to create vibrant, emotionally resonant works that celebrate the themes that have guided her from the beginning: love, life, laughter, and family.
