Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Belle Époque - "The Beautiful Age"Dawson Cole Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of works which offers guests an inside view to the world of Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the greatest masters in the history of art. This exhibition of lithographs aims to transport audiences back to France and into the so-called “Belle Époque,” or “Beautiful Age,” of late 19th century Paris. This group of lithographs provide a true sense of the avant-garde culture of 1890s France through Toulouse-Lautrec’s illustrations of the period. Proclaimed as one of the greatest modern masters, Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) created an incredible array of works over the course of a decade-long career, from paintings and drawings to his most famous and recognizable prints, posters, and advertisements.
In his art, Toulouse-Lautrec depicted the vivid world of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, recreating the spaces, subjects, and entertainments he loved most. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec captured the elegance and excitement of Parisian nightlife during the Belle Epoque. Though he was an aristocrat by birth, the artist was a fixture of the avant-garde bohemian scene centered in the Montmartre neighborhood—home of the famed Moulin Rouge, for which he made a series of promotional posters. Lautrec made the local artists, singers, showgirls, and prostitutes his subjects, capturing them in flat color, strong outlines, and unconventional angles and crops. Lautrec’s approach was inspired by Edo-period Japanese woodblock printing (known as ukiyo-e) and by fellow artists Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet—all three were keen observers of social culture.
