A silent medium within a silent medium. These are the words contemporary master Richard MacDonald uses in describing his world renowned Mime Series. MacDonalds trademark skill at investing his evocative bronze images with movement and life is never more evident than in his innovative and eloquent mimes. Sometimes enigmatic and most assuredly metaphoric, MacDonalds engaging performers invite the audience to be its own storyteller. Continuing in the spirit of his classical mimes, Richard MacDonalds work entitled Whiteface, Atelier, Red offers us an experience with whim, movement, and joy. The skillful modeling and effective use of patina amplify the physical and emotive strength of the work. As the mime moves to cover his pursed lips with his index finger, we hear him blow the sound of requested silence.
In 2014 and 2015, Richard MacDonald focused intently on the minerals and pigments of his patina process - specifically on the color red. Shortly thereafter, the artist revealed his discoveries in a new exhibition entitled “Richard MacDonald: Red.” The exhibition, which highlights MacDonald's creative immersion into the hue, the emotion, and narrative of color, represents a profound new direction in the artist's work.
