Composed of beautiful contrasting colors and sweeping line strokes that envelope the composition, everything works in unison to bring a warmth and richness to the quality of the image. Full of painterly textural features, the use of deep hues with light outlines are set on a dark background resulting in a still life that visually pops out of the composition. The apples are colored in a crisp green, and depth is created by the soft green and brown shadowing add beautiful detail to the still life. The dark pops of black suggestive of the stems of the apples correlate with the dark bowl and background and add color harmonies to the image. The favored subject of the still life is apparent throughout the artist's career, and this work is a prime example of the skill and creative intellect which Braque masters in this wonderful work of art.

Created in 1956, this color lithograph in eight colors on Arches paper is hand-signed by Georges Braque n pencil in the lower right margin.

Still life was Braque's preferred subject matter, and this dark, burnished study of three apples in a scalloped bowl, with its elegance and sureness of design, displays his mastery if it.
