During the 1950s, Salvador Dalí created a series of watercolor illustrations for Dante’s Divine Comedy, commissioned by the Italian government to mark Dante’s 700th anniversary in 1965. The project resulted in 100 color woodcuts, meticulously recreating Dalí’s watercolors with subtle washes and delicate lines. Rather than a literal interpretation, Dalí used a surrealist and psychoanalytic lens to explore Dante’s themes of hell, purgatory, and heaven. The edition showcases Dalí’s masterful fusion of classical literature and avant-garde artistry, making it a prized collector’s piece. This work represents one of the rare proofs pulled aside from the standard edition, making it more collectible and offering insight into the intricate woodblock printing process. It bears the authentication stamp, initials, and date of Bruce Hochman, the leading authority of Dali's works, on the reverse.
