Artists have long explored sleep as a magical state in which the physical body rests in serene repose while the spirit journeys through a world of dreams, memory, and imagination. Reflecting a lifelong fascination with the human psyche, Richard MacDonald gives poetic expression to this profound aspect of the human experience in Pillows. The first in a series of works inspired by the state of sleep, Pillows reveals the compelling sensuality of the female figure through expressive modeling and exquisitely refined detail.

Presented in the dramatic Blanc Noir patina, Pillows assumes an entirely new visual character. The interplay of luminous highlights against rich, velvety shadows accentuates the sculpture's flowing contours, inviting light to gently reveal the subtle transitions of form. As the viewer moves around the sculpture, shifting reflections create a quiet rhythm of depth and contrast that enhances both its sculptural elegance and emotional intimacy. The Blanc Noir finish transforms the work into a meditation on light, shadow, and stillness—mirroring the delicate boundary between the physical world and the realm of dreams.

A work of rare subtlety and timeless beauty, Pillows possesses a tangible physical presence while evoking a profound sense of tranquility, contemplation, and harmony. Through the refined drama of the Blanc Noir patina, MacDonald heightens the sculpture's emotional resonance, allowing its quiet poetry to unfold with every changing angle of light.
