Duality Column, winner of the prestigious 2022 National Sculpture Society’s Maurice B. Hexter Award, embodies the timeless paradox of harmony and interdependence of opposites, a principle fundamental to art from all time periods and cultures.
Derived from a masterwork solely created by Richard MacDonald, Duality Atelier celebrates this concept by depicting light and dark, day and night, male and female in perfect balance. This contemporary sculpture captures the essence of romance and love, highlighting the connection between a couple in a dance of opposites. The nude figures are sculpted to convey a state of harmony, transcending their individual elements to achieve a oneness that is both powerful and serene.
Richard MacDonald’s Duality is an expression of this universal truth, communicated through a composition of power, subtlety, and grace. Each piece in the Richard MacDonald Atelier collection is handcrafted by a select group of apprentices and artisans, alongside MacDonald himself. They meticulously follow the time-honored process of the lost wax method to cast the sculptures in bronze. The resulting pieces are finished with unique patinas in MacDonald’s Monterey studio/foundry.
These limited edition works are uniquely numbered and signed by Richard MacDonald, with each sculpture registered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The collection features iconic aspects of MacDonald’s lifelong inspiration, showcasing the balance and harmony of romantic love and the dance of duality.
