It depicts the arduous mountains cascading over Malibu's iconic coastline. "Rugged Malibu" is one of Lamb’s classic landscapes, with his distinctive swift brushstroke and monumental cliffs — a portion of which are dappled in the warm, soft glow of late afternoon sunlight. Lamb’s brushstrokes are built up in almost geometric form, giving this picture a richness and depth that is uncommon among California Impressionists. Signed lower left, "J. Lamb."
