Figurative sculpture is a language MacDonald speaks with astounding fluency, and as with any language, MacDonald’ creative drive is formed of a need to share the universal dialect of the human figure with those who understand it; this is the unique privilege the artist affords his viewers. He captures the beauty, romance and essence of the human spirit in motion. In “Dawn the Awakening” Dawn represents the awakening optimism and joy of woman as she embraces her passage childhood to womanhood and the awareness of horizons opening to her. She is the first of three symbolic studies of the three ages of womanhood: Dawn, High Noon, and Sunset.

In 2014 and 2015, Richard MacDonald focused intently on the minerals and pigments of his patina process - specifically on the color red. Shortly thereafter, the artist revealed his discoveries in a new exhibition entitled “Richard MacDonald: Red.” The exhibition, which highlights MacDonald's creative immersion into the hue, the emotion, and narrative of color, represents a profound new direction in the artist's work.
