A wonderful composition of one of Slonem's most iconic subjects, Butterflies. This piece depicts two delicate butterflies in ascension placed in a wonderful golden landscape. Slonem traces his famous crosshatch details throughout the piece, thereby revealing the beautiful orange, yellow, and chartreuse, underpainting. Inspired by nature and a genuine love for animals, Slonem's paintings encompass unique inspirations drawn from the world. While viewing this piece in person, it is as if we are surrounded by beauty and encased effortlessly in a golden landscape. This painting invites us to celebrate nature and the simplicity of flight from the elegant world of the butterfly. A continual exploration of post cubist abstraction and playful Formalism, emphasizing the tactile qualities of oil paint, Slonem's obsessive and repetitive rendering of his subjects reflects his desire to explore issues of spatial complexity, compression and density. The painting is signed and dated on verso.
