The 1930's marked for the artist a passage into the geometric abstraction for which he would become so well known. Born from his encounter with Piet Mondrian and his large colorful solids, Calder in his autobiography evokes a "shock" facing the vast compositions yellow, red, blue and black. This untitled lithograph is an excellent example of the artist's use of these primary colors, and it provides a preview into the artist's famous mobile sculptures. Signed 'Calder' in pencil lower right and noted EA lower left, this work is an Artist Proof aside from the edition of 75 printed by Arte Adrian Maeght, Paris and published by Société Internationale d'Art XXe Siècle, Paris.
