This is a limited edition stone lithograph by Marc Chagall titled '"Vitraux Pour Jerusalem." The two heraldic animals of the synagogue, embodying religious spirituality, celebrate and frolic around the torah. The foreground is filled with flowers and fruits which further suggests the celebration. This work was conceived in jewel-like colors which shows the influence of Byzantine and Russian icon painting and folk art. Chagall's work is heavy with his own personal symbolism but felt that the meanings and symbolism were to be interpreted freely by the viewer. This lithograph was created by Chagall for the release of a special folio on his 'Jerusalem Windows' which was printed in 1962. It was printed in France by Mourlot Freres with whom Chagall printed all of his lithographs beginning in 1950 until his death in 1985.
