Drawn from the performances of Stephan Choinier and his partner, Kristi Phillips, “Zumanity - Modern Dance V, Icarus Moon” takes the awe-inspiring moves of Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity” as a point of departure, and presents us with a whole new concept in contemporary figurative sculpture. Each figure has the anatomical integrity only Richard MacDonald can describe, modeled from the clay with deftness of touch, immediacy, and excitement. In this work we see the male and female performers taking non-traditional positions that stimulate the imagination; the dynamic nature of their interdependence speaks to the changing nature of modern relationships. Richard MacDonald has taken his interest in Cirque du Soleil to a new level, and produced works rich with meaning and striking in their originality and beauty.
In 2014 and 2015, Richard MacDonald focused intently on the minerals and pigments of his patina process - specifically on the color red. Shortly thereafter, the artist revealed his discoveries in a new exhibition entitled “Richard MacDonald: Red.” The exhibition, which highlights MacDonald's creative immersion into the hue, the emotion, and narrative of color, represents a profound new direction in the artist's work.
