Marc Chagall's "L'Aube" ("The Dawn") from the "Color Amour" series exemplifies his signature dreamlike style, rich with symbolism and vibrant emotion. Like much of the "Daphnis and Chloé" collection, this piece weaves together themes of love, nature, and myth, all told through Chagall's poetic lens.

In "L'Aube", Chagall captures the magical moment of dawn, representing new beginnings, hope, and the awakening of love. At the heart of the composition are two lovers, tenderly embraced, symbolizing the purity and beauty of love. They seem to float, untethered by the laws of gravity, as if love itself lifts them into a dreamlike state. Standing before them is a goat, a motif Chagall often used to evoke memories of his rural upbringing in a Jewish shtetl (small village). The goat symbolizes the simplicity, innocence, and warmth of village life, grounding the fantastical scene with a nostalgic connection to Chagall's roots.

The tone of "L'Aube" is one of quiet joy and gentle awakening, reflecting both the physical dawn and the emotional rebirth of love, hallmarks of Chagall’s romantic and mystical style. His use of light and shading imbues the scene with emotional depth, drawing the viewer into a world that transcends the ordinary, blending fantasy and feeling into a single, evocative vision.

Chagall's authorization for the reproduction of these prints is affirmed by a watermark on each piece, reading “Ceci est une reproduction Marc Chagall” (“This is a reproduction Marc Chagall”), alongside the artist's signature. Without this watermark, one might easily mistake the print for an original Chagall drawing, such is the care and detail in the reproduction process. Signed 'Marc Chagall" in the plate lower right.
