Marc Chagall's Le Poisson Volant (The Flying Fish) is part of his lithographic series Colour Amour (also known as Daphnis and Chloe), inspired by the ancient Greek love story Daphnis and Chloe by Longus. In this artwork, Chagall blends his signature dreamlike and fantastical elements with vibrant colors, evoking the innocence and enchantment of love.

Le Poisson Volant features a flying fish hovering above the scene, which can be interpreted as a symbol of love, freedom, or the surreal nature of romance. The fish, a recurring motif in Chagall’s work, seems to glide gracefully through a space filled with bright, fluid tones of blues, greens, and reds. Surrounding the fish, Chagall’s abstract human figures, animals, and flora add to the feeling of a whimsical, dreamlike world.

Chagall's use of bold, expressive colors and flowing lines captures a sense of movement and emotional depth, creating a magical, poetic atmosphere typical of his style. This lithograph reflects his exploration of love and fantasy, themes that resonate throughout the Colour Amour series.

Chagall's authorization for the reproduction of these prints is demonstrated by the fact that the paper of each print is impressed with a water mark reading, “Ceci est une reproduction Marc Chagall” (“this is a reproduction Marc Chagall”), together with the artist’s signature. Without the inclusion of the water mark, you could be forgiven for believing that you were holding an original Chagall drawing. The work plate signed 'Marc Chagall' lower right and dated '1954' in the plate lower left - referencing the creation year of the original ink pastel.
