"Black. It appears absent, empty, vacuous and yet, it is everything. White. It appears open, expansive, limitless and yet, it is nothing. Back, white…gray. Somewhere in between the depth and the light are the shades of interpretation. In a unique departure from patina to perspective, international artist Richard MacDonald presents Blanc | Noir, an exploration into the varying tones of black and white."

Continuing in the spirit of his classical mimes, Richard MacDonald’s work entitled “Rain, Blanc Noir” offers us an experience with rain, wind, movement, and joy. We feel the wind blowing the scarves; we see him holding and imaginary umbrella; we sense the water dripping from the mime’s palm onto the ground below.

Similar to artists Botero, Maillol, and Matisse, Richard MacDonald’s Blanc Noir series focuses on form and the intrinsic natural beauty of the sculpture without the distraction of color and pattern. The pure play of light over white caresses the form in all its subtleties, while the black absorbs the detail, creating mysterious shadows and focusing the eye on the overall silhouette. The artist selects only a handful of sculptures from his overall body of work for the Blanc Noir series. He then creates the smallest editions in his repertoire so as to ensure the uniqueness of each piece and captivate the most astute collector.
